NERC Certification Basics
NERC Certification is required for system operators who perform high voltage utility operations. It is important for these operators to understand NERC’s Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards to ensure reliable power production.
In addition to NERC Certification, system operators are required to complete Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) every three years. These CEHs can be conducted by third-party vendors. Some companies have their own dedicated training department. Third-party vendors can also provide mock audits and management guidance.
The requirements for NERC certification include knowledge of electrical theory and electric transmission, equipment specifications, and government regulations.
System operators also need to have good verbal and written communication skills. This certification helps system operators understand one another’s functions and work better together.
The courses cover essentials in power system fundamentals, as well as a variety of real-world tasks. These exercises range from basic switching to emergency response.
